Urgent Action
The Committee of Relatives of Detained and Disappeared in Honduras (COFADEH), expresses its concern and full condemnation over the repeated death threats against Carlos H. Reyes, a Leader of the National Front and the Popular Bloc from Honduras.
On May 20, 2010 at 6:00 pm, Carlos H. Reyes received an incoming call, from number 226 99 65, on his cell phone. When he answered, the voice on the other side of the handset said in a deep voice, "We will cut your head off in a few days, bastard!," the startled Carlos, answered, "Hello," and the subject repeated the threat " We will blow your head off in a few days, bastard, you only have a few days left." This situation is repeated three times.
These threats occur in a context of media disinformation where a division within the National Resistance Front is trying to be portraid. This campaign began when the Front began collection of signatures to demand a National Constituent Assembly in order to return the country to democratic and constitutional order.
In the past two months this strategy of misinformation has been implemented to discredit leaders of the opposition and then attack them, in some cases with irreparable damages. In the past two months, eight (8) people of the National Front have been killed. (25) are under death threats and twenty-six (26) have been forced to leave the country in order to preserve their life and integrity.
COFADEH requests the national and international community demand that The State of Honduras take all measures necessary to ensure an effective mechanisms to protect the life and integrity of the leader Carlos H. Reyes. Similarly, that they ensure effective protection for all social activists and ensure the right to defend universally recognized human rights, as stated in the Universal Declaration of United Nations Defenders, adopted in 1998 and the OAS Resolution 1999 and 2000.
