Honduras 9 Months After the Coup

Dr. Juan Almendares- is a Human Rights Activist and internationally recognized Honduran medical doctor. A torture survivor himself, Dr. Almendares has been targeted by death squads on many occasions. Dr. Almendares is the former Dean of the Medical School and subsequently Rector of the Autonomous University of Honduras (UNHA). He received the 2001 Barbara Cheste Award for his groundbreaking work with prisoners, victims of torture and the poor and indigenous populations. In 2007 Dr. Almendares was the sole recipient of the Humanitarian Award by Inter-Action in Washington D.C.


Dr. Luther Castillo is a young Garifuna medical doctor and community organizer, who direct the Luaga Hatuadi Waduhenu Foundation, ("For the Health of Our People" in Garifuna), dedicated to bringing vital health services to isolated indigenous coastal communities. After graduating in 2005 from The Latin American Medical School in Havanna, Cuba, Dr. Castillo returned to the Honduran coast, where he led the construction of Honduras' first Garifuna Rural Hospital. Since the military coup of June 28, 2009- the Hospital has been closed and subject to many threats and attacks from the military.
